Sunset Blvd Tunnel to Close

The SLNC has been advised that after years of community debate, the 75-foot-long pedestrian tunnel that runs below Sunset Boulevard at Golden Gate Avenue will be permanently closed. The tunnel was built in 1924 after several students who attended Micheltorena Elementary School were struck by cars while crossing Sunset. The trash-filled tunnel has been fenced and locked for decades and is considered a safety hazard by the Los Angeles Police Department. According to Council District 13 Field Deputy Mary Rodriquez, the tunnel will be sealed in July.
