Words Can Help….and Hurt: Life as an American Muslim

The first in a series of community discussions to explore how “Words Can Help… and Hurt” will take place on Saturday, August 12, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Silver Lake Library. Representatives from one of L.A.’s oldest Islamic cultural centers will guide a conversation on  ”Life as An American Muslim” in Los Angeles, and attendees will be invited to share their experiences and ask questions. SLNC Co-chair Anne-Marie Johnson said, “The SLNC’s goal is to give people the opportunity to have honest discussions about issues that could lead to misunderstandings and prejudice–and to learn tools to gain understanding and empathy.” The series is co-sponsored by the Silver Lake Library, and discussions on ageism, gender and sexual identity, post-racial America, and women’s rights and images will be held at future dates. To reserve a seat for the August 12 event, RSVP to anne.marie.johnson@silverlakenc.org.
