Two candidates for the recently vacated California Assembly District 51 seat made brief presentations at the SLNC Governing Board meeting on August 2. Dr. Ron Birnbaum, a physician, political activist and supporter of single-payer health care for California, and Mark Vargas, businessman and member of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and board member of CicLAvia, Inc., reminded attendees that a special primary election will take place on October 3, 2017, followed by a special election on December 5, to replace Jimmy Gomez, who was recently elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 34th District. The 51st Assembly District stretches from Echo Park and Silver Lake on the west to El Sereno and unincorporated East Los Angeles on the east.
