Second “Words Can Help…or Hurt” Event Inspires Spirited Conversation

Panelists Terry Jackson, CPA, community activist and SLNC treasurer; Dr. Maby Velez, senior services director, St. Barnabas Hollywood; and John Darnell, project coordinator, Department of Neighborhood Empowerment; spoke at a recent community discussion on ageism and aging.

A spirited group of Silver Lake residents gathered Saturday at the Silver Lake Library to discuss the realities of aging and whether “ageism” plays a role in employment opportunities, health and wellness and financial independence for the 46-plus million Americans who are over 65. The event was co-sponsored by the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.

John Darnell, project coordinator, Department of Neighborhood Empowerment; Dr. Maby Velez, senior services director, St. Barnabas Hollywood; and Terry Jackson, CPA, community activist and SLNC treasurer served as panelists for the discussion, the second in a series of conversations about issues that could lead to misunderstandings and prejudice. Attendees also shared their experiences in a spirited Q&A. Discussions on gender and sexual identity, post-racial America, and women’s rights and images will be held at future dates.
