Community Celebrates Movie Stars and Stairways

CD4 Councilmember David Ryu (center) joined SLNC Board members Barbara Ringuette, Lee Sherman, Betsy Isroelit and Terry Jackson at the 24th annual Music Box Steps Day. Councilmember Ryu thanked the SLNC for its continued and dedicated work in Silver Lake, including events like this.

Silver Lake turned out to celebrate its cinema heritage at the annual Music Box Steps Day, which attracted Laurel and Hardy fans from across Los Angeles. Silver Lake was home to famous movie studios – Selig Studios, 1909; Mack Sennett, 1912; and Tom Mix’s Mixville, 1916. Stars like Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson and the Keystone Kops made films in Silver Lake, along with the famed comedians. Silver Lake is also home to 52 historic stairways, which are protected and enhanced by the SLNC Green Committee. For more Silver Lake history, visit the SLNC History Collective channel on You Tube.
