The Education, Youth and Families Committee meets on the third Thursday of the month from 7:00 p.m.. to 8:30 p.m., at a local school or meeting room. Meetings are posted on the calendar. Please confirm the meeting location there.

M I S S I O N
The mission of the SLNC Education Committee is to publicize and promote education opportunities for all stakeholders in Silver Lake and to strengthen the relationship between schools and community by empowering students and their families to serve as informed advisors to Boards of Education on issues that affect students, families, communities, and schools.

G O A L S

  • Form working relationships with public schools, charter schools, private schools, pre-schools, adult schools, home schooling families, community colleges, adult education centers, and other educational institutions in and near Silver Lake.
  • Serve as a government entity actively hearing the concerns of students and their families regarding their education, and when possible, advocating on their behalf.
  • Advocate for all students, especially those at risk or in need of special attention, such as:
    • homeless youth
    • foster youth
    • LGBT youth
    • undocumented youth
    • children of incarcerated parents
    • children of those deployed in the U.S. Armed Forces
    • students misidentified and placed in inappropriate education categories
    • gifted students

P R O J E C T S

  • Vet education projects seeking funding from the SLNC.
  • Arrange speakers to address our students and families on topics of concern.
  • Work with the school district to keep our students and families up to date on the latest available programs.
  • Arrange and sponsor local education and child/youth safety events.
  • Encourage local organizations and businesses to fund scholarships for local students.
